Child support amounts are calculated using the parties’ incomes and the amount of time the children spend with each parent. After a petition for divorce has been filed either party can seek an order of support, or the parties can agree on an amount and submit a proposed order together to the court. That support order is in effect until the court changes it. Usually, a child support order is changed by the court in response to a request for a new order by one or both parties. Once the divorce judgment issues the child support order remains in effect. The order is changeable if there is a change in circumstances.
